Los mercados ya abrieron!

This Saturday marks the unofficial kickoff to the 2012 farmers market season, with several markets starting their regular spring hours.
Look for early spring produce, such as asparagus, carrots, turnips, onions, lettuces, radishes, green garlic, bok choy, chard — maybe even a North Texas artichoke or two — and artisan breads and baked goods, pastured meats and poultry, eggs, local cheeses, specialty products and more. Some producers are bringing in early South and West Texas produce.
Coppell Farmers Market goes to its weekly schedule, which is 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. The market is at 455 W. Bethel Road, between Denton Tap Road and Freeport Parkway, in Old Town. Call 972-304-7043 or go to coppellfarmersmarket.org.
Eden’s Organic Garden Center brings back its market days every first, third and fifth Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon, starting this weekend, with an emphasis on organics. 4710 Pioneer Road, Balch Springs; 214-348-3336; edensorganicfarm.com.
McKinney Farmers Market starts its weekly schedule at both locations, 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Chestnut Square Historic Village and 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Adriatica. Chestnut Square Historic Village, McDonald and Anthony (park in the lot on McDonald). Historic McKinney Farmers Market at Adriatica, 6851 Virginia Parkway; 972-562-8790.
Don’t forget that Cowtown Farmers Market in Fort Worth and Grand Prairie Farmers Market are also open every Saturday, and White Rock Local Market is in full swing every second and fourth Saturday. The Dallas Farmers Market is open daily.
